Courage and Innovation: 50 Years of transplantation
50th Anniversary Heart Transplant Celebration in Cape Town December 2-5, 2017
Information available in April at: http://www.1sthtx.com/
The 3rd of December 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant by Dr. Christiaan Barnard at Groote Schuur hospital. The University of Cape Town will be celebrating surgeons and scientists who have been courageous and innovative in their advancement of patient care and scientific endeavor.
In 1987, a small group of cardiovascular biologists met in Cape Town for the 20th anniversary celebration, and it was at this meeting that the ISACB was conceived with the election of Allan Callow as the first president. Therefore, we will use the occasion of the 50th heart transplant celebration to also celebrate the heritage of ISACB by hosting an off-year meeting “ISACB is 30 years old! The era of repair, replacement, and regeneration”. The ISACB sponsored sessions and dinner will be head on Monday, December 4th and will feature talks that highlight both the history and future of applied cardiovascular biology research.
This meeting will coincide with the following satellite meetings:
- North-South Dialogue: Cardiac Surgical needs in the presence of different pathologies; young patients; social determinants and limited access.
- Meeting cardiovascular medical needs in developing nations
- Donation after Cardiac Death Symposium
- Ventricular assist Device Symposium
- Rheumatic heart disease
This meeting promises to provide excellent discussions across a wide array of cardiovascular research topics. Please join us in celebrating the past and future of ISACB!
