The ISACB meeting comes to beautiful Banff Alberta for its first ever meeting in Canada! Join clinicians, engineers, and scientists from academia, government and industry in Banff to hear about the latest advances and network with the community.

The meeting theme for this year is Transforming Approaches to Cardiovascular Health and Disease: Enabling Biology and Engineering in Prevention, Diagnosis, Therapeutics and Devices.

This conference provides a forum for cardiovascular professionals working in academia, industry and clinics to convene to disseminate new information in their fields, build relationships with one-another and establish strategies for translating advancements. The focus of the conference will be upon translation of basic research including stem cells, tissue interactions and cardiovascular biomaterials and novel cardiovascular diagnostics, imaging and therapeutics. A dedicated plenary session will focus upon issues related to technology translation and commercialization.

About the Banff Centre

Gala Keynote Speaker - Friday September 9, 2016

Stuart Hutchison MD, FRCPC, FACC, FAHA, FASE, FSCMR, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Departments of Cardiac Sciences, Internal Medicine, and Radiology at the University of Calgary, and is a member of the Libin Institute and Stephenson Cardiovascular MRI Center.

He was educated in Cardiology at McGill University, acquired further sub-specialty training at the University of Southern California and at vascular physiology / pharmacology research fellowship at the CardioVascular Research Institute of the University of California at San Francisco. He was the Director of Echocardiography at St. Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto for a decade before moving to Calgary in Calgary in 2008.

He has written 80 articles, 15 book chapters, 72 abstracts, and 7 books with an 8th book in development, with interests in aortic diseases, pericardial diseases, complications of infarction, and multi-modality cardiac imaging. He has received Provincial Excellence in Teaching awards (PAIRO and PAIRA).

An avid sportsman, he has run twenty marathons, cycled through Europe and climbed the tallest peaks in the world across three continents. Having scaled the likes of K2 and having been within a few hundred feet of the summit of Mount Everest on his second expedition there, he points to some of the tallest in North America as his favorites and the scaling of Cho Oyo, the sixth tallest worldwide, as the most satisfying.

Dr. Starnes is a Professor of Vascular Surgery, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery for UW Medicine.  He is recognized nationally and internationally for his work in aortic pathology and vascular trauma, most notably the management of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms and acute aortic syndromes.

Dr. Starnes received his undergraduate degree at Albright College in Reading, PA, his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed his surgical training at Walter Reed in Washington, D.C.  Prior to accepting his position at the UW, Dr. Starnes spent a total of 15 years in the United States Army serving three combat tours, one in Kosovo and two in Iraq.   
Dr. Starnes’ current research activities focus on multi-branch and fenestrated endografting for complex aortic disease, vascular trauma and studying factors that influence outcomes for patients presenting with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. He currently serves as Principal Investigator on ten clinical trials and as Associate Investigator on an additional twenty-two clinical trials.  Dr. Starnes’ extensive research involvement combined with his clinical and technical abilities provides him with opportunities to speak regularly at medical conferences around the globe.  He has accepted fifteen national visiting professorships and lectured internationally in thirteen different countries including France, Belgium, Australia, the United Kingdom, Brazil and China.

In addition to clinical and research activities, Dr. Starnes is highly involved in the academic community of vascular surgery.  He has been author or co-author of over eighty peer-reviewed publications with a quarter as first author and written five book chapters.  Dr. Starnes’ editorial review responsibilities with the leading vascular journals include The Journal of Vascular Surgery, Circulation, New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet.  He is an active member of Western Vascular Society, Western Surgical Association and the Society for Vascular Surgery and current President of the Pacific Northwest Vascular Surgery Society. In addition he served as an Associate Examiner of the American Board of Surgery Vascular Surgery Certifying Examination in 2012 and as an Examiner in 2014.

1:00-3:00 Developing a TEDMED-Style Research Presentation

Have you been inspired by the personal, compelling nature of TED and TEDMED talks?  Do you wish you could present your work in a way that connects with your audience and distills your work into an uplifting story with lasting impact?  Think how helpful this skill would be in explaining your research to your friends, family, potential employers, or a funding agency!

The compelling nature of TED and TEDMED talks is not due to the inherent skills of the speaker.  These skills are learned, but you have to start somewhere. 

In this interactive workshop, trainees will take their presentation / research concepts through a transformation using the principles and instructions given to actual TEDMED and TED speakers, as described in the new book “TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking”.  This interactive workshop will cover how to shape your message and how to deliver this message effectively on stage.  At the end of the workshop, trainees will have the opportunity to present key aspects of their message.
